DEFCON.
For serious gamers only, seriously.
This is one sweet game. I've heard it for a long time and I decided to try it at long last.
And, Hell yeah. It is one sweet game.
Thermonuclear War sounds cheeky but I had never known that this baby can really pack a punch.
Gameplay.
Remember WarGames? It's a movie back from the old days, which a smug kid accidentally hacked into the military's system, he thought was a computer game and ended up starting World War 3. Everything were the same, designed, concepts, gameplay compared to the movie. Except for the game title, DEFCON.
It was a simple RTS made for only one sole purpose. To nuke the living shit out of everything. Asia, America, Russia, Soviet Union, Africa, and South America were involved in this World War III turmoil.
Well, you can select your choice of continent, each continent has their own weaknesses and advantages.
The world map is your playground. The game was like a radar itself. It made me feel like a General sitting in the Mission Control Room, controlling my fleets and armada, sending them into their doom and nukin' the living daylights out of my enemies. *Evil Laugh*
In fact, you don't just feel like one. You are one. I mean, really all you get to see in the game were all simply-well-designed- detailed Legend...in 2D.
Okay, belittle this game and I will bring you down to my knees. Let me nuke ya, with the following screenshots. *kaboom* follows by *Glowing and radiates effect.*(in this case)
How is it General? All you have to do is click the mouse and watch. Not to mention, it allows you to accelerate the time but still it always better to play in real time. You will need alot of concentration and time to take down the A.I. The shining small light indicates the lost of millions. Nah. It's just an explosion from the Nuke.
Around the far left of the map, near Tokyo, Japan, noticed that the submarines were nukin' the enemy from afar. Bwahahaha. Die! You Green Team! *The General has piratically gone insane*.
You don't really start to use your warheads immediately. You have to wait it out. Notice the bar that wrote DEFCON
Level 5 and 4 were for the players to placed their silos and fleets strategically. You wouldn't want everybody to know where you put your silos, right?
For now, all of you could not blow things up even though they were right in front of your face. Not until DEFCON 3. :)
Once it reaches 3 and 2, fleets were allowed to bombard each other. Hush! No nukes until DEFCON 1, General.
So, intelligence is the key to victory. Most of the time you will be scouting/recon the enemy's territory searching for intel.
This is the moment that we all been waiting for, DEFCON 1. Nukes pours from the heaven like rain and white lights shines brighter than the Polaris star, the numbers of dead populations arouses all of us. Yes, this is the moment! Launch your nukes like there is no tomorrow, no fear, it's just game. It won't happen like it does in the movie. :P
While bombing away, eerie cries and cough could be heard from the background music. Creating an intense and a little bit of chill for the gameplay.
Either by land or sea, nuke will always be the same.
For air-superiority, you could always fly a bomber to the enemy base and launch the nuke. Not to worry as they can fly almost half of the map before they ran out of fuel. Not to mention that, each jet bomber carries 5 nukes. Wohooo 5 x 5 = 25 nukes. 1 Nuke = Millions deaths. Muahahaha.
If you prefer more stealth and cunning methods, dispatch submarines to the enemy territory as they were invisible to the enemy's radars. As you emerge, quickly bombard the enemies' cities with your 5 stored nukes on each subs.
Nukes will be falling from every corner of the map. From the silos, subs, bombers, and carriers.
Nuclear silos has two purpose in this game.
First, in pre-launching mode. Silos were made to intercepts the warhead before it hits the target. Second, in launching mode. It stored sweet 10 nuke warheads ready to be launch, after DEFCON 1. Switching from modes, will take a few seconds of course. It is realistic. Which it makes the game good.
Launching the Nukes alert the whole world and give away your position. So, be wise to know when to use it.
Other than that, massacres the city population to win the game. That's the only mission.
Sadly enough, the game only supports up to three players including A.I. despite it's simplicity.
Nevertheless, it still has the multiplayer option. So, joined up with your friend and bombards each other arses. FTW. May the Plutonium be with you.
Be sure to click the image for a clearer picture. More explosions!
Conclusion
Graphics, were pure simple. Still the game sucked you in like a giant whirlpool. You won't even noticed you had played the game for hours. It sucks you in......
Audio, were very simple but it is still good. Explosions from the warhead, the units, the DEFCON warning were all classics.
The game is not boring, it is not for stupid people, it is made for pure RTS players. People who enjoys simplicity and yet find beauty in them.
It is balance. Every unit could be countered, subs could be deteced by Carriers when they were switched to Anti-Sub modes, Bombers could be taken down by Jet Fighters, Silos warhead could be taken down by subs nuke if you were fast enough. The game is well balanced. It's just that the A.I was a bit overpowered. LoL.
I blasted with DEFCON and the General gave me and the game a 4 Stars badge!.
4 out of 5 baby.
*all the fun only worth 50 MB.. YES MB and it can play in any computer. Pentium 2 i guess. LOL
